Syed Ali Shah Geelani, Kashmiri separatist leader, dies aged 91

Syed Ali Shah Geelani Death: Former Hurriyat leader Syed Ali Shah Geelani on Wednesday passed away at the age of 91, informed Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) chief Mehbooba Mufti. Mehbooba Mufti expressed her condolence over the demise of Geelani in a tweet. "Saddened by the news of Geelani Sahab's passing away. We may not have agreed on most things but I respect him for his steadfastness & standing by his beliefs. May Allah Ta'aala grant him Jannat and condolences to his family & well-wishers," she tweeted. Also Read | DSGMC Election Results 2021: SAD (Badal) emerges victorious Born on September 29, 1929, Geelani was recently sent a reminder notice to pay a penalty of Rs 14.4 lakh, which was imposed upon him under the Foreign Exchange Management Act (FEMA) by the Enforcement Directorate (ED). Under strict house arrest for around a decade, Geelani developed “breathing complications” on Wednesday around 10.30 pm and breathed his last, family sources said. Image Geelani, a resident of Sopore, was being looked after by his sons, who were allowed by the administration to visit him. There is no official word on the cause of death of Syed Ali Shah Geelani. Image Meanwhile, police sources said the security arrangements were being made for the final rites of Geelani, who had desired to be buried at Srinagar’s ‘Martyrs’ Graveyard’ where most militants and separatist leaders are buried. However, the police would ensure the funeral is attended by a limited number of his relatives. Internet suspended in Kashmir valley  

Kashmir Zone Inspector General of Police (IGP) Vijay Kumar on Wednesday informed that restrictions have been imposed in the valley, including suspension of Internet services. “Restrictions imposed, including suspension of Internet services in the Valley”, said IGP Kashmir.
