Paris Olympics 2024: Vinesh Phogat appeals against disqualification, asks for Silver; verdict tomorrow
Paris Olympics 2024: Wrestler Vinesh Phogat has filed an appeal with the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) over her disqualification from the wrestling final at the Paris Olympics 2024. She has asked for the silver to be given to her.
The Indian wrestler's move comes after she was disqualified from the women's 50kg wrestling final for being 100 gm heavier than the permissible limit.
The Court of Arbitration for Sport is an international body established in 1984 to resolve sports-related disputes through arbitration.
Earlier, Indian Olympic Association lodged strong protest to the sport’s world governing body United World Wrestling (UWW).
The Union Sports Minister Mansukh Mandaviya made a statement in the Parliament saying, “The Indian Olympic Association has lodged a strong protest with the International Wrestling Federation (UWW) over this matter.”
He quoted UWW’s rule saying, “ If an athlete does not participate or fails in the weigh-in (first or second), he or she will be eliminated from the competition and placed last without any rank."
