Paris Olympics 2024 Badminton: Injury withdrawals affect Lakshya Sen and Sat-Chi in group stages

Paris Olympics 2024 Badminton: Similar to Lakshya Sen, India's Satwik-Chirag will not be playing their second group game on Monday, July 29. Due to Mark Lamsfuss's and Marvin Seidel's withdrawal from the competition due to the former's knee ailment, the match has been canceled. This implies that the outcome of Satwik-Chirag's second game is now void.

On Monday morning, BWF released a statement regarding Lamsfuss's injury and wished him a quick recovery. The withdrawal also had an impact on Ronan Labar and Lucas Corvee, as their match against the German duo was now void.

"German men’s doubles player Mark Lamsfuss has withdrawn from the Olympic Games Paris 2024 badminton competition due to a knee injury."

"Lamsfuss’ and teammate Marvin Seidel‘s remaining Group C matches against India’s Satwiksairaj Rankireddy/Chirag Shetty (Court 3, 8.30am local time, 29 July 2024) and Lucas Corvee/Ronan Labar of France (Court 1, ‘Not Before’ 2.50pm local time, 30 July 2024) will not be played."

"Matches on these courts in each respective session have been rescheduled."

"As per BWF General Competition Regulations for group stage play, the results of all matches played, or yet to be played, involving in Group C are now considered deleted," according to the BWF statement.

It would most affect Lakshya, whose victory over Kevin Cordon was canceled after the Guatemalan shuttler pulled out of the tournament with an injury.

How the withdrawals affect Lakshya and Sat-Chi

Lakshya is in a difficult predicament because of what has happened recently. Cordon's withdrawal and the BWF's ruling mean that Lakshya is the only member of his group who has participated in three games. To go to the knockout stage, Julien Carraggi and Jonatan Christie, the other players, will each play in just two matches. The next matchup for Lakshya and Carraggi is scheduled on Monday, July 29.

Things are a little better for Satwik-Chirag because they get an extra day off and can concentrate on winning their next match to advance. In the doubles, the top two finishers advance, but in Lakshya's instance, just the top table finisher advances to the next round.

In the men's and women's 10 m air rifle events on Monday, India will have two medal contenders: Arjun Babuta and Ramita Jindal.
