Jugraj Singh: From selling water bottles at Attari Border to becoming India's new hockey star

PTC News Desk: Jugraj Singh became an unexpected hero for the Indian men’s hockey team when he scored the decisive goal against China in the 2024 Asian Champions Trophy final. The match remained goalless for the first three quarters, but Jugraj's strike in the 51st minute secured a record-extending fifth title for India.

Although Jugraj, a 27-year-old center-back, rarely scores, this particular goal was a moment of glory that resonated with his remarkable journey. Before his rise to prominence, Jugraj sold tricolour flags and water bottles to tourists at the Attari-Wagah border to support his family financially.

His father, Sukhjeet Singh, worked as a porter for nearly three decades and revealed how his son juggled various jobs to contribute to the household income.

“I have only known hard labor, but my son has made me and our family proud. He used to sell flags at the Beating Retreat ceremony to help support us, but look where he is today,” Sukhjeet told The Indian Express.

Jugraj’s life took a turn when he was discovered by coach Navjit Singh, who saw potential in him and began coaching him on a grass field at Government Senior Secondary School. Navjit recalled how Jugraj’s physical strength, developed through assisting his father, set him apart from other boys.

"Jugraj was stronger than kids his age, probably because he had to lift heavy loads when helping his father,” Navjit explained.

Navjit went above and beyond for his students, reaching out to friends in England and Canada to provide them with hockey kits. Despite his demanding days, Jugraj never faltered in his commitment to the sport.

“Jugraj would practice twice a day, in the morning and afternoon, before heading out to sell flags. Even with late nights, he was always the first to arrive at training in the morning,” Navjit added.

In 2009, Jugraj joined the Baba Uttam Singh National Hockey Academy in Khadoor Sahib, where he honed his skills over the next four years, participating in Nehru Cup competitions. His perseverance finally paid off when he made his debut for the senior Indian men’s hockey team during the FIH Hockey Pro League in 2021-22.

From humble beginnings at the Attari-Wagah border to becoming a national hero on the hockey field, Jugraj’s journey is a testament to determination, hard work, and an unwavering commitment to his passion.
