Border Gavaskar Trophy: Bumrah gets fifer, folds Australia for 104
India's captain, Jasprit Bumrah, earned his 11th five-wicket haul, while debutant Harshit Rana delivered a fiery opening spell, as Australia were dismissed for 104 just before lunch on the second day of the opening Test on Saturday. This came despite a strong last-wicket stand from Mitchell Starc and Josh Hazlewood.
The Indian team may feel slightly disappointed that they couldn't establish a significant lead, which seemed likely after Australia was reduced to 79 for 9. However, Starc (26 off 113 balls) played a key role in protecting Hazlewood (7 not out off 31 balls) during their 25-run partnership for the final wicket, which lasted 18 overs. This reduced Australia's deficit to 46 runs, setting up a more competitive second innings.
The day began positively for India when Bumrah (5/30 in 18 overs), in the second over of the day, bowled a delivery that rose sharply from a good length, causing Carey's edge to carry to Rishabh Pant behind the stumps. The captain's celebration was modest as he calmly walked back to his bowling mark, even before Nathan Lyon had reached his position.
Meanwhile, Bumrah began the day with the strong Harshit Rana (3/48 in 15.2 overs), continuing from where he had left off on the first day.
