PTC Web Desk: Indian pacer Jasprit Bumrah has been named the ICC Men’s Cricketer of the Year for 2024, following a remarkable season that saw him shine across formats. Bumrah also became the first Indian fast bowler to win the prestigious Sir Garfield Sobers Award, beating top contenders Travis Head, Joe Root, and Harry Brook.

The award highlights Bumrah’s exceptional contributions, including his pivotal roles in India's Test series wins against England and Bangladesh at home and the T20 World Cup victory. He is the fifth Indian to receive the Sir Garfield Sobers Award, joining the elite list of Rahul Dravid (2004), Sachin Tendulkar (2010), Ravichandran Ashwin (2016), and Virat Kohli (2017, 2018).

Jasprit Bumrah also clinched the ICC Men’s Test Cricketer of the Year award after a standout performance during the Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024-25, where he claimed 32 wickets. In total, he picked up an impressive 71 wickets in 13 Test matches in 2024, the highest by any bowler during the year.

Bumrah played a key role in India’s T20 World Cup victory, finishing the tournament with 15 wickets at an outstanding average of 8.26. His efforts helped India defeat South Africa in the final and secure the coveted trophy. He was also named Player of the Tournament for his brilliant bowling display.

Expressing his gratitude, Bumrah said the T20 World Cup win was a defining moment in his career. “I am really happy to win the Sir Garfield Sobers Men’s Cricketer of the Year award. Last year was truly memorable, especially the T20 World Cup victory in Barbados, which will always remain close to my heart,” Bumrah said.

He also reflected on the honour of receiving an award he once saw his cricketing heroes achieve. “When I was younger, I watched many legends win this ICC award. It feels incredible to be on the receiving end now.”

Currently recovering from a back niggle sustained during the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, Bumrah aims to be fully fit in time for the Champions Trophy scheduled for February.
