Devajit Saikia elected new BCCI secretary succeeding Jay Shah
PTC News Desk: Former Assam wicketkeeper Devajit Saikia has ben elected as new BCCI secretary. Saikia took assumed the position succeeding Jay Shah after he took over as chairman of International Cricket Council.
Saikia's first task as the secretary was to attend the meeting alongside BCCI president Roger Binny as the board discussed India's performance in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy against Australia.
Devajit Saikia, a native of Assam has a diverse background encompassing cricket, law, and administration. A former first-class cricketer, he played four matches as a wicketkeeper between 1990 and 1991. Despite his brief cricket career, Saikia scored 53 runs and made 9 dismissals.
After cricket, he took over law and started practicing at the age of 28 in the Gauhati High Court. He had also secured jobs in the Northern Frontier Railways and the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) through sports quotas.
Saikia's involvement in cricket administration began in 2016 when he was appointed one of the six vice presidents of the Assam Cricket Association (ACA) during Hemanta Biswasarma's presidency, who is now the Chief Minister of Assam. He went on to become the ACA secretary in 2019.
