PTC News Desk: The Board of Control for Cricket in India Secretary Jay Shah has directed the BCCI to release Rs 1 crore immediately to provide financial help to former India player and head coach Anshuman Gaekwad who is battling cancer.

Shah also spoke with Gaekwad's family to assess the situation and offer support, according to the BCCI Apex Council statement.

"The board stands by Gaekwad's family in this hour of crisis and will do whatever is essential for his quick recovery. The Indian Cricket Board will continue to monitor Gaekwad's progress and is confident that he will come out of this phase strongly," the statement read.

The 71-year-old is a former Indian cricketer who has twice served as India's cricket team coach. He is noted for his concentration and has played for India in 40 Tests and 15 One-Day Internationals. Gaekwad made his test debut against the West Indies in December 1974.

Earlier, Kapil Dev asked the BCCI for financial aid for his teammate Anshuman Gaekwad.  Kapil Dev stated that he and other Indian greats including Mohinder Amarnath, Sunil Gavaskar, Sandeep Patil, Dilip Vengsarkar, Madan Lal, Ravi Shastri, and Kirti Azad are hoping to raise funds for their teammate.

"It's sad and very depressing. I am in pain because I have played with Anshu and cannot bear to see him in this condition. Nobody should suffer. I know the Board will take care of him," Kapil Dev said.

"We are not forcing anyone. Any assistance for Anshu will have to come from the heart. Standing up to some of the toughest fast bowlers, he took hits to the face and chest. Now is the time for us to stand up for him. I am confident that our cricket fans will not fail him. They should pray for his recovery," he added.
