Australia's Pat Cummins joins elite list with T20 World Cup hat-trick

PTC News Desk: On Thursday, star pacer Pat Cummins made history in Antigua by being the seventh player overall and the second Australian player to score a hat-trick in an ICC Men's T20 World Cup match.

The bowler reached the milestone in the present ICC T20 World Cup Super 8 match at Sir Vivian Richards Stadium against Bangladesh. In a T20 World Cup encounter against Bangladesh, the Australian speedster reached the milestone by taking three wickets in two consecutive overs.

At Sir Vivian Richards Stadium, Cummins achieved the double by having Towhid Hridoy caught at short fine on the first ball of his last over after taking two wickets from the last two deliveries of his third over.

The 31-year-old pacer is now the only Australian bowler to have taken a hat-trick in a Men's T20 World Cup, joining fellow countryman Brett Lee, who accomplished the same feat against Bangladesh in 2007.

Cummins joins a select group of just seven players—Lee, Curtis Campher, Wanindu Hasaranga, Kagiso Rabada, Karthik Meiyappan, and Josh Little—who have all scored a hat-trick in a Men's T20 World Cup.

Prior to the game, Australia's Pat Cummins' outstanding hat-trick helped them hold Bangladesh to 140/8 in their Super 8 match of the ongoing ICC T20 World Cup 2024 at the Sir Vivian Richards Stadium. This was despite Najmul Hossain Shanto's valiant 41 and Towhid Hridoy's blitz cameo of 40 runs.

With five wickets between them, Cummins and Adam Zampa were Australia's standout bowlers. Marcus Stoinis, Glenn Maxwell, and Mitchell Starc each contributed one. With just Towhid Hridoy remaining in the middle, his side reached the 140-run mark with some fierce smashes.

Australia defeated Bangladesh 140/8 in their opening Super Eights match at the T20 World Cup, with Cummins finishing with 3/29.
