AFG vs AUS, T20 WC 2024: Australia was taken aback by an outstanding spell from Afghanistan bowlers led by Gulbadin Naib and Naveen-ul-Haq, who secured a 21-run win for the Asian team in the Super 8 match of the 2024 T20 World Cup at Arnos Vale Ground.

It was a night to remember for Afghanistan and their supporters in St Vincent. The surprise was obvious in Afghanistan's dugout when Naveen removed Ashton Agar, bringing his team one step closer to one of the biggest surprises in tournament history.

Travis Head was outdone by the movement of the ball. Naveen broke through his defence and knocked the bails over, forcing the opener to walk back for a three-ball duck.

Skipper Mitchell Marsh (12) displayed intent by picking up a couple of boundaries, but Naveen's clever speed outwitted him.

David Warner followed in the duo's footsteps, with Mohammad Nabi ousting the experienced opener.

With wickets dropping at one end, Glenn Maxwell led the fight against the opposition with a blend of calm and ruthlessness. With Maxwell on the crease, nostalgia began to flood the entire stadium. Maxwell's ODI World Cup heroics were destined to be repeated. But this time, Gulbadin came to Afghanistan's rescue by directing Maxwell (59) the way to the dugout.

Australia never recovered from the blow and suffered its first 21-run defeat to Afghanistan.

Afghanistan has managed to keep their dreams of making their first semi-final of the competition alive.

However, their chances of reaching the final four remain bleak. Following the significant victory, they are level on points with Australia, with both teams having two each. But Australia has a much higher net run rate.

Australia is in second place with a positive NRR of 0.224, while Afghanistan is in third place with NRR of 0.650.
