Sonia Gandhi meets Ghulam Nabi Azad after 'G-23' intensifies pressure
New Delhi, March 18: Congress president Sonia Gandhi met party leader Ghulam Nabi Azad on Saturday. The crucial meeting comes a day after the core group of its 'G-23' dissidents held the third round of discussions following the massive election debacle in five states.
The senior Congress leaders, Sonia Gandhi and Ghulam Nabi Azad held a discussion at the former's residence at 10 Janpath.
The dissidents have been holding meetings since Wednesday, denouncing the Gandhi family's stance at the party's highest decision-making body, the Congress Working Committee, on Sunday. Despite repeated setbacks, loyalists insist on maintaining the Gandhis' leadership.
Sonia Gandhi's offer to step down from all positions along with Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra was rejected by party leaders at the latest CWC meeting.

Since writing to Sonia Gandhi in 2020 following a spate of election failures, the G-23 has been persistently seeking a revamping of the organisation. The Congress has lost Punjab and has been almost eliminated in Uttar Pradesh and other states.
In a statement released on Wednesday, the group had claimed that the "only way forward for the Congress was to adopt a model of inclusive and collective leadership and decision-making at all levels." They stressed that their goal is to "strengthen" Congress rather than "undermine" it in any way.
