Singer Lata Mangeshkar dies at 92; nation mourns
Legendary singer Lata Mangeshkar has passed away at the age of 92 on Sunday. Mangeshkar was admitted at Mumbai's Breach Candy hospital after testing positive for Covid-19 in early January. Lata Mangeshkar perished in the ICU of the hospital where she had been admitted for nearly three weeks. Along with the deadly virus, the legendary singer also battled pneumonia. According to sources, Lata Mangeshkar died at 8:12 a.m and the singer's family will allow friends and fans to pay their respects at Mumbai's Shivaji Park. The singer was undergoing intensive therapy. Due to her critical condition, she was put on ventilator support once again after recovering from Covid-19 and pneumonia. The legendary singer was under the observation of doctors in the intensive care unit. Lata Mangeshkar, who received the Bharat Ratna, Padma Vibhushan, Padma Bhushan and Dadasaheb Phalke Awards, was an icon of Indian cinema, having recorded playback for a long list of Hindi films, as well as in Marathi and Bengali. Ms Mangeshkar, who came from a well-known musical family, also composed music and produced a few films. She was called the 'Nightingale of India'. Born in 1929, Lata Mangeshkar was the eldest of five siblings. Their father, who himself was a classical musician Pandit Deenanath Mangeshkar gave the young Lata Mangeshkar her first music lesson. In 1942, when her father passed away, 13-year-old Lata started her career in music, juggling singing with acting parts in the Marathi film industry. In 1945, the singer had an early hit in the Mahal film's song Aayega Aanewala, starring Madhubala. After that, Lata Mangeshkar's voice and career rose to new heights from then on. Following the death of the iconic singer, Prime Minister Narendra Modi extended his condolences and tweeted, "I am anguished beyond words. The kind and caring Lata Didi has left us. She leaves a void in our nation that cannot be filled. The coming generations will remember her as a stalwart of Indian culture, whose melodious voice had an unparalleled ability to mesmerise people." She closely witnessed the transitions of the Indian film world for decades. Beyond films, she was always passionate about India’s growth. She always wanted to see a strong and developed India," he said in another tweet. "I consider it my honour that I have always received immense affection from Lata Didi. My interactions with her will remain unforgettable. I grieve with my fellow Indians on the passing away of Lata Didi. Spoke to her family and expressed condolences. Om Shanti," he added.
