The Istri Akali Dal (IAD) president Bibi Jagir Kaur after a meeting with the female Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee members and the Sikh female intellectuals said that Sikh women must be exempted from wearing helmets in Chandigarh like in Delhi. She also said that the Istri Akali Dal delegation will meet the governor to get an exemption at the earliest. The Istri Akali Dal will also meet the Akal Takht Jathedar on this issue. 'This law is injustice to the Sikh women; it has also hurt our sentiments. Sikh women must be exempted from wearing helmets in Chandigarh like in Delhi,' said Bibi Jagir Kaur during the press conference. 'In our 'Rehatnama' wearing of caps is strictly prohibited. It is a matter of concern that the administration has made such laws,' she said. Istri Akali Dal president Bibi Jagir Kaur said, 'If the government is concerned with the safety of women they should find ways to provide them with a dignified life and keep them away from rapes, murder and other day to day problems.' 'It's a matter of concern that helmets have been made mandatory for Sikh women. The need of the hour is to make laws for women's protection,' Bibi Jagir Kaur said. 'If someone wants to wear it willfully, we don't have a problem but you can't impose a rule like that on Sikh women,' she added. 'We will force them to make an exemption for Sikh women because if today we don't fight for our rights then who would fight for the fundamentals of Sikhs and the Sikh virsa', she said. -PTC News
