Shaheed Udham Singh Jayanti 2019: The man who waited for 21 years to avenge the death of those who were assassinated by the British administrator Michael O’Dwyer in 1940, following the Jallianwala Bagh massacre in 1919. Singh was born on December 26, 1899, who was orphaned at an early age. The young Singh was growing up in Punjab when the state was witnessing the deep political turmoil. Also, he was observing the intense political scenarios developing around him. Udham Singh was a revolutionary who belonged to the Ghadar Party, known for assassinating Michael O' Dwyer, the former lieutenant governor of Punjab in India, on 13 March 1940. This was the revenge for the Jallianwala Bagh massacre in Amritsar in 1919. Meanwhile, Singh was convicted in the murder and was hanged on July 1940. Also, there are reports, that while he was in custody, he used the name Ram Mohammad Singh Azad, which represents the three religions of Punjab and his anti-colonial sentiment. Likewise, he is referred to as Shaheed-i-Azam Sardar Udham Singh. Furthermore, a district of Uttarakhand has been named after him- Udham Singh Nagar.
