Tesla unveils first Robotaxi 'CyberCab' at 'We, Robot' Event | Check key features
PTC Web Desk: Tesla has unveiled its first robotaxi, the 'CyberCab,' at the 'We, Robot' event held in California on Friday. The presentation was made by CEO Elon Musk, who highlighted the AI features of this innovative vehicle.
The two-seat CyberCab is designed without a steering wheel or pedals, signifying a significant shift toward fully autonomous driving. Priced at under $30,000 (approximately Rs 25 lakh), Musk expressed optimism that production of the CyberCab would commence by 2027.
In addition to the CyberCab, Tesla introduced another autonomous vehicle, the 'RoboVan,' which can accommodate up to 20 passengers and is capable of carrying cargo. Musk provided an example of its potential use for transporting sports teams, showcasing the versatility of Tesla's upcoming offerings.
Key Features of the CyberCab
Cost-Effective Operation: Operating the CyberCab will cost approximately $0.20 per mile, equivalent to around Rs 16 for every 1.6 km.
Wireless Charging: Unlike conventional electric vehicles, the CyberCab will feature wireless charging capabilities, eliminating the need for a plug.
Compact and Functional Design: The CyberCab is a fully self-driven electric vehicle with a compact cabin designed for just two passengers. A flat-screen dashboard provides essential information and controls.

A Futuristic Aesthetic
The design of the CyberCab draws inspiration from Tesla's Cybertruck, featuring a sleek exterior with a thin connecting LED light at the front that functions as a Daytime Running Light (DRL). Both ends of the vehicle are equipped with projector headlamps, while butterfly-wing doors enhance its futuristic appeal. The rear storage compartment mirrors the design elements of the Cybertruck.

Vision for a fleet of self-driving taxis
Musk envisions developing a fleet of self-driving Tesla taxis, enabling Tesla owners to list their vehicles as part-time taxis when they are not in use. This innovative approach allows vehicle owners to earn extra income through a network that facilitates ride-sharing.
The new robotaxi model positions itself as a compact, futuristic two-seater with butterfly doors, targeting established autonomous taxi services such as Waymo and Cruise. Tesla aims to carve out its niche in this competitive market by offering a distinctive product.
Tesla's strategy relies on its camera-based Fully Self-Driving (FSD) system, which sets it apart from competitors that utilise lidar and radar technology. The latter technologies are generally more expensive, giving Tesla a potential advantage in terms of cost-effectiveness.
