Solar Spectacle: NASA releases breathtaking photos of Sun's powerful solar flare

Washington DC (US), June 21: NASA's Solar Dynamics Observatory captured breathtaking images of the Sun emitting a strong solar flare.

The Sun emitted a powerful solar flare on June 20, reaching its peak at 1:09 p.m. Eastern Daylight Time (EDT).

What are Solar flares?

Solar flares are high-energy bursts. Solar flares and eruptions can disrupt high-frequency (HF) radio communications, power grids, and navigation signals, and pose risks to spacecraft and astronauts.

The June 20 solar flare was classified as an X1.0 flare, with "X" signifying the highest powerful category. The number gives more information about the flare's strength within its class.

Most powerful flare in history

According to Fox Weather News, the most powerful flare in history had a significantly greater impact. NASA observed a flare measuring at X28 in the fall of 2003, and it released particles that bombarded instruments around Earth.

This bombardment, which rated 5 out of 5 on the SWPC scale, led satellite engineers to switch some satellites to operate in safe mode, NASA said.
