Ola's bold move: Ditches Google Maps and Microsoft Azure for in-house Ola maps

PTC Web Desk: Ola has taken a significant step by completely dropping Google Maps and Microsoft Azure in favour of its in-house developed Ola Maps. This strategic move is saving the company a substantial Rs 100 crore each year. Ola’s CEO, Bhavish Aggarwal, announced on Twitter that the company, which used to spend Rs 100 crore annually on Google Maps, has reduced that cost to zero by switching to Ola Maps this month.

"After Azure exit last month, we’ve now fully exited Google Maps. We used to spend Rs 100 crore a year, but we’ve made that zero this month by moving completely to our in-house Ola Maps! Check your Ola app and update if needed. Also, Ola Maps API is available on @Krutrim cloud! Many more features coming soon - street view, NERFs, indoor images, 3D maps, drone maps, etc.!” Aggarwal tweeted.

Aggarwal also revealed that Ola Maps would soon introduce numerous new features, including street view, indoor images, 3D maps, and drone maps. The Ola Maps API is already available on Krutrim Cloud, allowing developers to integrate it into their own applications. This will provide users with more detailed and enhanced maps, improving their overall experience.

For those interested in the development process behind Ola Maps, Aggarwal mentioned that a detailed blog post would be published this weekend. This blog would explain which parts of Ola Maps were developed in-house and which parts were sourced from open-source resources, offering tech enthusiasts a deeper understanding of the technology behind Ola Maps.
