India plans to create its own AI model; AI safety institution will also be established: Ashwini Vaishnaw
PTC Web Desk: Union Minister of Information Technology Ashwini Vaishnaw on Thursday said DeepSeek, a leading Chinese open-source AI model, would soon be hosted on Indian servers to address concerns over data privacy.
In his announcement, Ashwini Vaishnaw highlighted India’s growing ambitions in the AI space, adding that the country planned to develop its own foundational AI model in the upcoming months. The minister also talked about the introduction of 18,693 graphics processing units (GPUs) under a unified computing facility.
Vaishnaw outlined a series of initiatives that would position India at the forefront of global AI innovation, including the establishment of an AI safety institution. He also highlighted that India's computing infrastructure is currently the most affordable globally.
Earlier in March, the government committed over Rs 10,300 crore for its IndiaAI mission, a project aimed at boosting AI startups and creating a robust AI ecosystem within the country.
The minister defended the government’s substantial investment in AI, citing the success of DeepSeek’s $5.5 million model, which has been highly effective in complex reasoning tasks. Vaishnaw’s comments echoed OpenAI CEO Sam Altman’s skepticism about India’s ability to develop competitive AI models during his visit last year.
DeepSeek, a Chinese-developed AI model, has recently gained significant attention, with its app surpassing OpenAI’s ChatGPT in downloads on the Apple App Store.
