Russia-Ukraine War: Ukraine President seeks PM Narendra Modi's support in UNSC
New Delhi, February 26: Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelenskyy spoke to Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday over the deteriorating situation in his country and urged for India's political support in United Nations Security Council (UNSC) against Russia which continues its military offensive in Ukraine.
Zelenskyy on Twitter said, "Spoke with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Informed of the course of Ukraine repulsing Russian aggression. More than 100,000 invaders are on our land. They insidiously fire on residential buildings. Urged India to give us political support in UN Security Council. Stop the aggressor together!"
During his talk with President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, PM Modi expressed his deep anguish about the loss of life and property due to the ongoing conflict. He also reiterated his appeal for an immediate end to violence and a return to dialogue.
The Indian Prime Minister also expressed India’s willingness to contribute in any way towards peace efforts.
Prime Minister further conveyed India’s deep concern for the safety and security of Indian citizens, including students stranded in Ukraine. He sought facilitation by Ukrainian authorities to expeditiously and safely evacuate Indian citizens from the war-ridden country.
Notably, Russia vetoed a draft UN Security Council resolution on Ukraine on Friday, while India, China and the United Arab Emirates abstained. There were 11 yes votes, one no vote, and three abstentions. India abstained from voting and added that the path of the "diplomacy was given up".
As Moscow continues its military operation in Ukraine, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky urged Germany and Hungary to support Russia's expulsion from the SWIFT banking system.

"We have almost full support from EU countries about disconnecting Russia from SWIFT. I hope Germany and Hungary will have the courage to support this decision," said Zelenskyy in a video address that was shared on his Telegram channel.
Zelenskyy further said that Ukraine has a right to EU membership and achieving this would be a key sign of support for the country.
"This is the decisive moment to close one and for all the multi-year strategic discussion, make a decision on Ukraine's membership in the European Union. I discussed this with Charles Michele, Ursula von der Leyen, Emmanuel Macron," the Ukrainian President said.
According to reports, a decision on whether or not to cut Russia off from the international financial network SWIFT will be taken in the days ahead.
As Putin ordered special military operations in the Donbas region "to protect" the people, several countries have denounced Russia's military operations and imposed sanctions on Moscow, including the United Kingdom, the United States, Canada, and the European Union.
