Punjab: Power demand jumps to 1000MV as summer makes sudden entry
Patiala, March 18: As Punjab experiences a dramatic rise in temperature, there has been a significant increase in the power demand in the state. Meanwhile, due to the onset of the summer season, Punjab is likely to face an electricity crisis due to the power demand surge. It's worth noting that with the arrival of summer Punjab's power demand is predicted to rise by 1,000 MW. Punjab's thermal plants, on the other hand, are facing a coal scarcity which has caused worries among the public. A unit at Talwandi Sabo thermal plant in Banawala village in Mansa district was recently shut down due to a coal shortage. The remaining two units, which are now operating at full capacity, are also on the edge of closure, according to sources. Meanwhile, the GVK thermal plant at Sri Goindwal Sahib is also anticipated to face coal scarcity. According to sources, one unit at the GVK plant was shut down while the other unit has been running at half capacity. Speaking about thermal plants at Lehra Mohabbat, sources revealed that only one unit is running and have 19 days of coal reserves left. Similarly, three units of the Ropar thermal plant are operating with just 24 days stock of coal. According to sources, private thermal plants are experiencing a coal scarcity due to a lack of racks from the railways.
