Punjab power crisis deepens; 2 of 4 units of Ropar thermal plant shut
Ropar, May 17: Patiala: As Punjab faces shortage of coal supplies and long power cuts, another unit of Guru Gobind Singh Super thermal power plant (Ropar thermal plant) was shut due to leakage in the boiler on Monday night. According to sources, one unit of 210 MW at the Ropar thermal plant faced shutdown due to boiler leakage. Meanwhile, 2 out of 4 units of Ropar thermal plant have faced shutdown and 3 of 4 units of Lehra Mohabbat thermal plant were shut earlier. Speaking of government thermal plants, 5 out of 8 units are down. Similarly, due to a lack of coal, one of the Goindwal Sahib thermal plant's units has been shut down. Talwandi Sabo thermal plant's one 660 MW unit had previously been shut down for maintenance. Six of the 15 units of five thermal plants, both private and government-owned, have been shut down; resulting in a total power shortage of 1360 MW. Since March of this year, the state has seen an unprecedented increase in power demand due to a dramatic rise in temperature. On Thursday, May 12, Punjab's power demand reached a new high of 10,495 MW, forcing the Punjab State Power Corporation Limited (PSPCL) to call on consumers to take austerity measures.
