Punjab govt to credit over Rs 2,000 crores to farmers' accounts on April 16
Chandigarh, April 16: Punjab Government will transfer over Rs 2,000 crore to the bank accounts of farmers to make MSP payments on Saturday. According to a government spokesperson, Rs 828 crore has already been sent to their accounts. The department had processed and cleared payments of Rs 2,137 crore, which would be transferred straight to farmers' accounts by banks on Saturday. Meanwhile, the teams will survey six districts on Saturday to assess the extent of shrivelled grains arriving in state mandis. The teams had already surveyed 17 districts earlier. Talking about the expected disruption in procurement due to overnight rain and consequent stagnant water in mandis, the spokesperson stated that the board officials had worked overnight to ensure the grain markets were cleared of stagnant water, resulting in no disruption in procurement operations. So far, 36 lakh tonnes of wheat have arrived in the mandis, with the state procurement agencies already procuring 33 lakh tonnes. The overall quantity of unsold wheat lying across the state is just 3 lakh tonnes, which is 40% of a single day's arrival, indicating that mandis are running smoothly and that more than 60% of the day's arrival is purchased on the same day, he added.
