Punjab Elections 2022: Valuables worth Rs 449.55 cr seized till date
Chandigarh, February 16: Various enforcement teams in Punjab seized valuables worth Rs 449.55 crores in violation of the Model Code of Conduct till February 15, after the polls code was enacted in the state ahead of assembly elections 2022, informed the officials on Wednesday. Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) of Punjab, Dr S Karuna Raju while giving more details in this regard on Wednesday said that the surveillance teams have seized 50.19 lakh litres of liquor, which is estimated to be worth Rs 30.37 crore. Similarly, the enforcement squads have also found psychotropic substances amounting to Rs 325.87 crores along with confiscating unaccounted cash of Rs 30.77 crore, he added. "As many as 1540 vulnerable hamlets have been identified. Besides this, 4,292 individuals have been identified as probable sources of trouble," the poll officer said adding, out of these persons, preventive action had already been initiated against 3778 persons and the remaining would also be brought to book." Raju also informed that from a security point of view 2,532 people have been bound down under preventive sections of the Code of Criminal Procedure (CrPC) act. Meanwhile, the Election Commission of India (ECI) has sought action against Punjab State Information Commissioner Anumit Singh Sodhi for participating in his father Rana Gurmit Singh Sodhi's poll campaign, which is a violation of the model code of conduct imposed for the state assembly elections on February 20. Poll officer Raju said that two complaints were received against the information commissioner. Also Read | Elections 2022: BJP mocks Congress, says 'stop daydreaming about winning in Goa' “The video/pictures sent by the complainant do not leave any doubt that Anumit Singh is taking part in the election campaign and political activity,” read a letter by EC. “On the basis of reports, facts, rules and provisions of model code of conduct, the EC has found that Anumit Singh has violated the provisions of the RTI Act and the provisions of model code of conduct issued by the EC,” it further added. Notably, Punjab will hold assembly elections on February 20. The counting of votes will take place on March 10. Since just a few days are left for assembly polls, political parties are heavily campaigning in the state to woo voters.
