Punjab Elections 2022: PM Modi to address public rally in Jalandhar
New Delhi, February 14: Just days ahead of crucial assembly elections in Punjab, Prime Minister Narendra Modi is scheduled to address a public rally in Jalandhar on Monday. Currently, Congress runs the state; the 117 assembly seats in Punjab are set to go on assembly polls on February 20. The counting of votes will take place on March 10. In the 2017 Assembly elections in Punjab, the Congress had won an absolute majority by winning 77 seats and ousted the SAD-BJP government which had been in power for 10 years. Prime Minister's Punjab rallies come over a month after a security lapse during his Ferozepur visit. On January 5, there was a lapse in PM Modi's security when he was stuck atop a flyover for at least 15-20 minutes while on his way to Ferozpur due to the road blockade by some protesters. PM's visit seeks to give a further boost to the National Democratic Alliance campaign in Punjab. Cancelling the virtual rallies for 27 Assembly seats of Jalandhar, Kapurthala and Bathinda, the BJP had announced that PM Modi will hold an election rally in Jalandhar on February 14. PM Modi had started a series of virtual rallies on February 8 and addressed the people of Ludhiana and Ferozepur constituencies. As on the following day, arrangements had been made for the next virtual rallies, it was announced that he would visit here for a physical rally. The decision to hold a physical rally comes after the party felt that the impact of the virtual rally is not much and that it fails to sway the voters in the BJP's favour.
