Punjab: CM Mann declares holiday on Bhagat Singh's death anniversary on March 23
Chandigarh (Punjab), March 22: Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann on Tuesday declared a public holiday in the state for March 23, on the death anniversary of Shaheed-e-Azam Bhagat Singh. On the third day of the Punjab Vidhan Sabha session, CM Mann said that the holiday will allow the people of Punjab to visit Khatkar Kalan, the ancestral village of Bhagat Singh to pay homage.
Shaheed Diwas (Martyr's Day) is observed on March 23 to pay tribute to three young freedom fighters - Bhagat Singh, Sukhdev Thapar and Shivaram Rajguru - who were hanged at the Lahore Central Jail on the day in 1931. A resolution to install a statue of Shaheed-e-Azam Bhagat Singh and BR Ambedkar was also passed in the Punjab Assembly on Tuesday. While Congress MLA Pratap Bajwa also proposed to install the statue of Maharaja Ranjit Singh. Also Read | Fuel price hike: Petrol, diesel prices increase after 137 days; check new rates Notably, Bhagwant Mann took oath as the Chief Minister of Punjab on March 16 in a grand ceremony organized in Khatkar Kalan, the ancestral village of the revolutionary freedom fighter. Earlier in a video message, Mann had invited the people of the state for his oath-taking ceremony, urging men to wear 'Basanti (yellow)' turbans and women yellow 'dupatta (stole)' for the event. Basanti colour signifies revolution and the spirit of sacrifice and is associated with Bhagat Singh.
