Zirakpur: Student ends life after 'school scolding and police harassment' ; child rights panel reacts
PTC Web Desk: A tragic incident has surfaced in Zirakpur, where a minor boy, identified as Maulik Verma, allegedly ended his life by hanging himself from a ceiling fan. The deceased was a student of a government school in Chandigarh. A suicide note was reportedly recovered from his pocket, prompting the Punjab State Commission for Protection of Child Rights to take suo motu cognizance of the matter.
The commission has directed the Mohali police to submit an investigation report by April 3. In a letter to the district police chief, the commission stated that the matter involves serious allegations against the Chandigarh police and the school authorities.
According to reports, Maulik was a Class 11 non-medical student at Government Senior Secondary School. The issue began when some students, including Maulik, were accused of creating and circulating memes of certain teachers on social media. The school authorities had summoned the students and their parents, warning them about the consequences. Following this, the students deactivated their social media accounts. However, despite four months passing since the incident, the school management allegedly continued to harass the students.
Media reports further indicate that the students were called to the police station by ASI Gurdev Singh from the Cyber Crime Cell, Sector 17, Chandigarh. It is alleged that the students were subjected to physical abuse at the police station, which deeply distressed Maulik, leading him to take the extreme step. The suicide note was reportedly recovered by doctors at JP Hospital.
In its official communication, the commission has noted that Maulik, a resident of Zirakpur, was allegedly mentally harassed by ASI Gurdev Singh and school staff, which is a grave concern. The Commission has directed the Mohali district police chief to conduct a thorough investigation, examining all relevant documents, statements, and CCTV footage to determine what led Maulik to take his own life.
