Year Ender 2024: Turbulent turn of events that gained significant buzz across Punjab
PTC News Desk: From farmers protest to assassination attempt at SAD leader Sukhbir Singh Badal and conflicts among inter-party, 2024 has been one of the most tumultuous year for Punjab. While the state mourns the loss of India's former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, Punjab also bid farewell with a tearful eye to poet Surjit Singh Patar.
Demise of Dr. Manmohan Singh
India's former Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh passed away in Delhi on December 26 after prolonged illness. Native of Punjab, he left indelible mark in India's politics. He was the first Sikh Prime Minister of India.
Farmers' Protest
Two years after the farmers called off their protest against now repealed three farm laws, farmers resumed their agitation in order to press Centre against their demands and unfulfilled promises. Multiple attempts by farmers to march towards Delhi were foiled by Haryana police. Meanwhile, a protesting farmer was killed during the clashes that broke out between farmers and Haryana Police. jagjit Singh Dallewal is now on a fast unto death to press the Centre to hold talks with the farmers. Doctors have termed his condition "critical".
Akali Dal's Inter Party Feud
Shiromani Akali Dal witessed some of the most turbulent events in party's history with inter party rift resulting in the creation of rebel faction. The party witnessed a rebellion and was rebuked by the Akal Takht for "mistakes" committed by its government in Punjab from 2007 to 2017 and Sukhbir Singh Badal was declared a 'tankhaiya'.
Assassination Attempt at Sukhbir Singh Badal
Sukhbir Singh Badal had a close shave while he was undergoing religious penance as pronounced by Akal Takht, highest temporal body of Sikhs. An assassination attempt was made at SAD leader which was foiled by security personnel deployed for his security.
Victory of Panthic Pitch
Amritpal Singh, chief of Waris Punjab De won Lok Sabha Elections from Khadoor Sahib who is currently lodged in Assam's Dibrugarh jail under the National Security Act. Sarabjeet Singh Khalsa, the son of one of the two assassins of former prime minister Indira Gandhi, won Faridkot constituency.
Surjit Singh Patar's Death
Famous Punjabi poet Surjit Singh Patar took a last breadth on May 11 at his residence in Ludhiana. He passed away at 79 years of age. In 2012, he was honoured with Padma Shree for his phenomenal and exceptional contribution. He was highly celebrated for his work across the nation.
