Who is Gulab Chand Kataria?
79-year-old Kataria is a BJP veteran from Rajasthan. He was born to the Hukmi Chand Kataria and the Lahari Bai on October 13, 1944.
He received his Master's degree in Geography from Mohanlal Sukhadia University in Udaipur. He also pursued law at the same university. He's married to Anita Kataria.
He is deeply rooted in the ideology of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh. He is a BJP veteran with significant influence in the Mewar-Wagad region in southern Rajasthan.
He has been in politics for almost 40 years.
Gulab Chand Kataria was elected as a Janata Party MLA from Udaipur for the first time in 1977. In 1980, he was re-elected as a BJP candidate. He served as an MLA in Udaipur eight times and represented the seat in the Lok Sabha in 1989.
Kataria, the 31st Governor of Assam, has previously served as Rajasthan's Home Minister and Leader of the Opposition in the Assembly.
The CBI charged Kataria with the encounter killing of Sohrabuddin Sheikh, but the court ruled him not guilty. The evidence against them was deemed "insufficient" by the court. Kataria, Rajasthan's home minister, was accused of being part of a plan to eliminate Sohrabuddin at the behest of the state's marble lobby.
