Heavy rainfall and thunderstorms are expected in Punjab, Haryana, and Chandigarh till August 1. Heavy rain is also expected in regions of Delhi and West Uttar Pradesh.

Weather update: Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh likely to witness heavy rainfall till August 1

Weather update: Heavy rainfall and thunderstorms are expected in Punjab, Haryana, and Chandigarh till August 1. Heavy rain is also expected in regions of Delhi and West Uttar Pradesh. The extreme weather could impact northeast Rajasthan, the lower hills of Jammu and Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, and Uttarakhand. 

According to IMD, rainfall activity is expected to intensify across Punjab in the next 48-72 hours.


“Widespread moderate to heavy rainfall activity is expected in the next 48-72 hours over Punjab. We have issued an orange alert for heavy rainfall activity on Wednesday and Thursday. People should take appropriate precautions,” the weather department said.

Meanwhile, Punjab is experiencing major rain deficits, with 44% less rainfall, affecting agriculture. According to data from the India Meteorological Department (IMD), Punjab has the country's largest rain deficit. The state received 44% less rainfall than the long-period average (LPA) during the first two months of the monsoon.

According to the IMD weather bulletin, Punjab received 117 mm of rainfall, compared to the long-period average (LPA) of 209.9 mm.

After Punjab, Jharkhand has a rain deficit of 41%, while the Haryana-Delhi and Chandigarh metrological region has a rain deficit of 40%.

Only three districts, Pathankot, Mansa, and Tarn Taran, have received normal rainfall all over the monsoon season so far. Patiala, Fazilka, Muktsar, Faridkot, Jalandhar, Rupnagar, and Ludhiana districts have had a 50% rain deficit during the monsoon season to date.
