Tensions escalate over pride parade scheduled in Amritsar, Sikh organisations issue strong objection
PTC News Desk: A Pride parade scheduled for April 27 in Amritsar has sparked controversy after Sikh organisations and Nihang Singhs have launched strong objection over the scheduled event.
Prominent Sikh leader Paramjit Singh Akali has requested appealed the local administration not to allow the parade citing that such events go against local cultural and social values and it could the cultural sentiments.
He further said that religious sentiments must be respected in a city considered sacred in Sikhism.
"We strongly warn those who are doing and organizing this that we will not allow a gay parade to take place in Amritsar under any circumstances," Akali said.
"The police administration should stop this because we will not allow such a dirty program to take place in Amritsar which is called the land of martyrs. If the administration fails to stop the event, then they ourselves will interven," he further added.
The administration has so far not issued any response regarding the approval or objection to the event.
The event has drawn massive backlash from the Sikh organisations after a video of the event was shared on social media. The event is scheduled for April 27, at Rose Garden in Amritsar where people belonging to LGBTQ community have been appealed to show up for the same.
