Temperature rises above normal in Punjab, Chandigarh; orange alert issued due to pollution

PTC Web Desk: Chandigarh, along with several cities in Punjab, has witnessed a slight increase in maximum temperatures. The average temperature in Punjab has risen by 0.5°C, while Chandigarh's average temperature has increased by 0.1°CPunjab's temperature is now 2.1°C above normal, and Chandigarh's is 3°C higher than usual.

In Bathinda, the recorded temperature was 35.4°C. According to the Meteorological Centre, there is no forecast for rain in Punjab for the next seven days, with similar conditions expected in Chandigarh. However, while morning minimum temperatures are continuing to drop, the day-night temperature variation is causing health issues for many people.



Orange alert issued in Chandigarh and two Punjab cities for air pollution

The air quality in Chandigarh and Punjab has reached alarming levels. Both Amritsar and Mandi Gobindgarh in Punjab, along with Chandigarh, have crossed the 200 Air Quality Index (AQI) mark, triggering an orange alert.

Chandigarh's pollution levels have risen to an AQI of 210, while Amritsar and Mandi Gobindgarh have recorded AQIs of 221 and 235, respectively. Other cities such as Jalandhar, Khanna, Ludhiana, Patiala, and Rupnagar have also seen concerning AQI levels, with Jalandhar at 170, Khanna at 156, Ludhiana at 193, Patiala at 151, and Rupnagar at 110. These cities are now under a yellow alert due to deteriorating air quality.

Health impact of rising pollution

The increasing pollution levels in Chandigarh and across Punjab are beginning to affect the health of residents. Eye irritation has become a common issue, and people with asthma and respiratory conditions are experiencing heightened difficulties. Cases of respiratory diseases have surged as a result of the polluted air.
