Supreme Court raps Punjab, seeks blood reports of Dallewal by 1 pm on Dec 20
PTC Web Desk: The Supreme Court has expressed grave concern over the deteriorating health of jagjit Singh Dallewal, a farmer leader who has been on a hunger strike for 24 days. The Court directed the Punjab Government to prioritise Dallewal's medical care and submit his blood test reports by 1 pm on Friday.
A Bench comprising Justices Surya Kant and Ujjal Bhuyan reprimanded the state for its inadequate response, stating, “A person over 70 years of age on a hunger strike for 24 days cannot be declared 'alright' without proper medical tests.”
Punjab Advocate General Gurminder Singh informed the Court that senior officials had engaged in dialogue with Dallewal. “Initially, there was resistance, but medical experts are now assisting him on-site,” Singh said.
He added that a local facility, Haveli, had been converted into a makeshift hospital equipped with emergency medical services. However, Justice Kant questioned the practicality of such an arrangement, emphasising the need for immediate medical attention and proper hospital facilities.
The Punjab AG highlighted logistical challenges, citing a gathering of 3,000-4,000 supporters who were obstructing access by blocking roads with trolleys. Justice Kant dismissed this as an excuse, asserting, “No one should take the Court for granted. It is your responsibility to ensure his health is prioritised.”
The Supreme Court criticised state officials for failing to perform their constitutional duties and ordered that all necessary tests, including blood work and CT scans, be conducted promptly.
The Court proposed that Dallewal be convinced to pause his hunger strike for a week to receive medical treatment, suggesting that another leader could continue the agitation in his absence.
The matter has been re-listed for hearing at 12.30 pm on Friday, with the Court expecting a detailed report on Dallewal’s medical condition and steps taken by the Punjab Government to address the situation.
