Son, daughter-in-law allegedly kill father in Ludhiana; cremate body to cover crime

PTC Web Desk: In a shocking incident reported from a village near Mullanpur Dakha, Ludhiana, a man and his wife allegedly murdered his elderly father and hurriedly performed his last rites to disguise the crime as a natural death. The police initiated an investigation after suspicions were raised by the deceased's nephew, who came from Canada after hearing the news of his uncle's death.

The deceased has been identified as Jagrup Singh, a resident of Balipur Khurd. Based on a complaint filed by his nephew, Kiranveer Singh, the police have registered a case against the accused—GurIqbal Singh alias Makkhan and his wife, Surinder Kaur alias Chhinder, both residents of the same village. The couple is currently absconding.

The police said Kiranveer Singh, who resided in Canada, lodged the complaint. Kiranveer revealed that his uncle Jagrup had raised him after his father passed away during his childhood. Jagrup had taken care of him, educated him, and sent him to Canada. After Kiranveer’s mother passed away three years ago, Jagrup also managed the family’s farmland.

In several phone conversations, Jagrup expressed fear for his life, alleging that his son and daughter-in-law were mistreating and assaulting him. Two days before his death, Jagrup had called Kiranveer, detailing another instance of abuse. Kiranveer was preparing to travel to India when, on December 3, he received a call from his cousin, Inderjeet Kaur, informing him of his uncle’s sudden demise. Kiranveer requested the family to delay the cremation until his arrival, but the accused hastily performed the last rites.

Upon reaching India, Kiranveer began investigating the circumstances of his uncle’s death. He discovered that those who prepared the body for cremation noticed injuries on the back of Jagrup’s head, along with bleeding. A reliable source later provided Kiranveer with a pen drive containing video evidence.

The video reportedly shows the daughter-in-law assaulting Jagrup and pushing him, causing him to fall and sustain fatal head injuries. The son allegedly encouraged his wife to continue the assault, which eventually led to Jagrup’s death. Following the incident, the accused coerced family members into proceeding with the cremation without legal intervention.

The investigation revealed that the accused's son had sent his wife abroad to evade arrest. The family had earlier faced social intervention after a similar assault on Jagrup in July 2024. A resolution had been reached for the accused to vacate the family home by December 2024, but instead, they allegedly committed the heinous crime. The police have registered a case against the accused and are conducting further investigations.
