Stubble burning: Punjab officials slapped with show cause notice after surge in farm fire cases

PTC News Desk: The Commission for Air Quality Management (CAQM) has slapped show cause notice to the the Deputy Commissioners (DC) and Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) of Sangrur and Ferozepur districts in the wake of increasing farm fire cases in the region. Officials including Sangrur DC Sandeep Rishi, Ferozepur DC Deepshikha Sharma, SSP Sartaj Singh Chahal and Ferozepur SSP Saumya Mishra have been directed to submit their response. 


The commission in the notice sought explanation for the rising cases of stubble burning and failure of implementing orders to curb air pollution.

“The commission hereby directs you to explain why action should not be initiated as stipulated under Section 14 of the Act, for non-compliance, contravention of the order(s), direction(s) issued by the commission,” the notice stated.

Out of the total cases of farm fires that marks 418, maximum number of cases were reported from Sangrur with 103 cases followed by Ferozpur with 72 cases.

The air quality in Punjab and adjoining regions remained a matter of concern with rising pollution levels and smog continuing to blanket several areas. Amritsar recorded an AQI of 204 on Tuesday, followed by Mandi Gobindgarh (241), Jalandhar (217), Ludhiana (203) and Bathinda (203).
