SGPC to establish rules for appointment of Jathedars, says Advocate Dhami
PTC Web Desk: In a significant announcement, Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) president Advocate Harjinder Singh Dhami emphasised the need to uphold the honour of Singh Sahibans and Sikh organisations while ensuring that future appointments of Jathedars are made in consultation with Sikh sects and organisations.
Speaking to the media at the SGPC office, Advocate Dhami said rules governing the eligibility, appointment, responsibilities, and retirement of the Jathedar of Sri Akal Takht Sahib would be formulated soon. A high-level committee would be established for this purpose, and a resolution would be passed in the upcoming SGPC Budget 2025 session for approval. Furthermore, a "One Position, One Individual" policy will be implemented for these respected posts.
Advocate Dhami also assured that the vacant position of the Jathedar of Sri Akal Takht Sahib would be filled soon in consultation with Panthic sects and organisations.
Reaffirming the significance of Sikh traditions, customs, and history, Advocate Dhami highlighted that these elements served as guiding principles. He stressed that Sikh institutions must move forward collectively and strategically to tackle contemporary challenges.
He warned against anti-Sikh forces that are actively working to weaken Sikh institutions and influence. "If the Sikh community does not demonstrate unity, anti-Sikh elements will continue to succeed in their agenda," he said.
Advocate Dhami also addressed concerns about the retirement process for Jathedars, stating that their departure from service will be conducted in a respectful and honourable manner. Additionally, Singh Sahibans who have served in the past will be duly honoured for their contributions.
Acknowledging the challenges of leading the SGPC, Advocate Dhami described his tenure as a demanding responsibility. He expressed gratitude towards religious, social, and political groups, as well as the respected Singh Sahibans, for encouraging him to continue his service after his recent resignation. He vowed to uphold the trust placed in him by various Sikh organisations and sects.
