Punjabi-origin Canadians shine in Manitoba provincial assembly elections
PTC Web Desk: In a remarkable display of talent and dedication, three Punjabi-origin Canadians have secured seats in the Manitoba provincial assembly. Diljeet Brar, Mintu Sandhu (also known as Sukhjinderpal), and Jasdeep Devgan, have not only made their community proud, but have also contributed to the diverse political landscape of Manitoba.
All three victors proudly represent the New Democratic Party (NDP), which has won the majority and will consequently form the provincial government. Interestingly, Diljeet Brar and Mintu Sandhu are also contenders for Cabinet positions, adding to the significance of their achievements.
A total of nine Punjabi-origin non-resident Indians (NRIs) were in the electoral race. Unfortunately, six candidates — Navraz Brar, Sumit Chawla, Kirt Hayer, Paramjit Shahi, Manjit Kaur Gill and Amarjit Singh, did not secure a win this time.
Diljeet Brar, originally from Bhuchangari village in Muktsar, boasts a master's degree and previously worked as a broadcast journalist before relocating to Canada in 2010. His professional experience also includes a stint in the Manitoba Agriculture Department until 2018.
Mintu Sandhu, who moved to Canada with his family at the age of 16 in 1989, brings a unique perspective to the assembly. He not only owned a gas station but also played a crucial role in modernising the transportation system in Manitoba.
Jasdeep Devgan, the third triumphant candidate, had served as the director of government and community engagement at the University of Manitoba. His dedication and accomplishments are highlighted by his distinction as the youngest-ever vice-president of the Sikh Society of Manitoba.
