Punjab weather update: All flights scheduled to arrive at Amritsar airport cancelled; dense fog hits air and rail travel

Punjab and Chandigarh continue to grapple with dense fog, severely impacting air and rail travel. Visibility in Amritsar dropped to zero at 10 pm last evening, leading to the diversion of flights. A Kuala Lumpur-bound flight scheduled to land at Sri Guru Ramdas Ji International Airport in Amritsar was redirected to Delhi at 10:15 pm due to poor visibility.

All flights scheduled to arrive from Delhi, Pune, and Mumbai at Amritsar Airport this morning have been cancelled, leaving numerous passengers stranded. Rail services on the Amritsar-Delhi route are also experiencing delays of 2-3 hours, causing further inconvenience.

Despite the ongoing foggy conditions, the Meteorological Department has predicted a rise in temperatures by 2-3°C over the next five days in Punjab and Chandigarh. This change is attributed to a western disturbance active over Iran and cyclonic circulation in Jammu and Kashmir, which could bring rain to Punjab on January 5-6. A subsequent weather shift is anticipated post-rainfall.

While no weather alert has been issued for Punjab and Chandigarh today, partial cloud cover and fog are expected in several districts, which may contribute to a slight temperature increase.

In the past 24 hours, Punjab’s average maximum temperature rose by 0.9°C, remaining close to normal. Bathinda recorded the highest maximum temperature at 16.6°C. However, the minimum temperature dropped by 0.5°C. Chandigarh recorded a maximum temperature of 13.2°C, 5°C below normal, and a minimum of 8.6°C.
