Punjab Vidhan Sabha Monsoon session begins today with tributes and key legislative agenda

Punjab Vidhan Sabha Monsoon Session: The Punjab Vidhan Sabha's three-day monsoon session will begin on Monday (September 2), with expectations of a potentially contentious period. Before the session commences, tributes will be paid to deceased personalities, including Padma Shri-awardee poet Surjit Patar and several notable legislators and freedom fighters.

Following the tribute ceremony, legislative business is anticipated to proceed, subject to the final decision of the Business Advisory Committee. Should proceedings occur, Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann is likely to attend. The session is scheduled to run until September 4 and will commence daily at 2 pm. Honoured individuals include former Speaker Surjit Singh Minhas, former minister Sukhdev Singh Dhillon, former state minister Surjit Singh Kohli, former Lok Sabha member Kamal Chaudhary, former Rajya Sabha member Gurcharan Kaur, and other prominent figures such as Dhanwant Singh, Sardul Singh, freedom fighter Kashmir Singh, Hardev Singh and Jagdish Prasad.

Post-tribute, legislative activities will continue. The opposition is expected to target the government on issues of law and order and drug trafficking. Congress leader and MLA Aruna Chaudhary has emphasised that her party will address the deteriorating law and order situation, which is considered one of the state's major concerns.

Key agenda items for this session include proposed amendments to Section 12 of the Punjab Panchayat Election Rules 1994, modifications to the Punjab Family Rules 2010, the establishment of a new session court in Malerkotla, and revisions to the Punjab Superior Judicial Rules 2007. The session may also address matters related to agricultural policy.
