Punjab to move SC to determine legality of House proceedings amid Governor's objections

PTC Web Desk: Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann, while addressing the special session of the Vidhan Sabha on Friday, said the Punjab Government would approach the Supreme Court on October 30 to determine the legality of the House proceedings following the objections raised by Governor Banwarilal Purohit.

On the other hand, the two-day special Assembly session, which was called today only, was adjourned till further notice. It is learnt that it would reconvene in the first week of November.

During the special Punjab Vidhan Sabha session, a proposal to adjourn the House was presented by Minister for Parliamentary Affairs Balkar Singh and was subsequently approved by the House.

Earlier, the Congress had expressed concerns about the legality of the session. In response, the Speaker and ministers affirmed that the session was unquestionably legal.

During the Zero Hour, Leader of Opposition Partap Bajwa inquired if the government had allocated any time to discuss the SYL (Sutlej-Yamuna Link) issue and expressed the Congress party's desire to address it. He emphasised the need to discuss the Bargari sacrilege issue.

Bajwa pointed out that the government's convener had promised to address the Bargari issue within 24 hours of taking office. He also highlighted the accusations made by MLA Kunwar Vijay Pratap Singh against the Chief Minister, suggesting a lack of support on the Bargari matter.

Furthermore, Bajwa urged Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann to ensure the suspension of MP Sandeep Pathak, alleging that despite representing a Punjab constituency, the MP was taking a pro-Haryana stance on the SYL issue.

SAD MLA Manpreet Ayali raised concerns about the erroneous cancellation of a significant number of BPL (Below Poverty Line) cards, especially after the distribution of blue cards for the poor throughout the state.

MLA Pargat Singh emphasised the treatment of the Tarn Taran SSP in a sand mining case, advocating for fair and respectful treatment of the upright officer.

Cabinet Minister Aman Arora asserted that despite opposition noise, the session was legally valid. He clarified that under Rule 16, the House could be adjourned, and the Speaker had the final authority in this matter.
