Punjab to hold Panchayat Samiti and Zila Parishad elections before May 31
PTC Web Desk: Punjab is set to conduct Panchayat Samiti and Zila Parishad elections before May 31, as confirmed by the State Election Commission. An official notification has been issued, stating that all necessary preparations have been completed to ensure smooth polling. The announcement highlighted that the election dates will be scheduled considering the ongoing board exams and the procurement season for Rabi crops.
Punjab currently has 153 Panchayat Samitis and 23 Zila Parishads. The Election Commission aims to organise the elections strategically, taking into account key state activities to maximise voter participation.
Reflecting on the previous year, Punjab witnessed a series of elections, including Lok Sabha polls, by-elections, and municipal corporation elections. The Congress secured eight seats in the Lok Sabha Elections, while the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) triumphed in the by-elections. In municipal corporation elections, AAP received a mixed response from voters.
With the 2027 Assembly elections approaching, winning the upcoming Panchayat and Zila Parishad elections is crucial for the ruling party. These elections are particularly significant in rural regions, serving as a key indicator of voter sentiment. The political party that emerges victorious will gain valuable insights into its rural vote bank in Punjab.
