Punjab Sub-Inspector shot dead during village dispute in Tarn Taran; CM announces Rs 2 crore relief
PTC Web Desk: A Punjab Police sub-inspector was shot dead during a violent altercation between two groups at Kot Mohammad Khan village, located in Tarn Taran district, Punjab. The incident occurred under the jurisdiction of Sri Goindwal Sahib police station. Another police official was also injured during the clash.
Sub-Inspector Charanjit Singh was leading a police team to the village in response to an online complaint regarding a renewed scuffle between two factions. The groups had reportedly been involved in a dispute for several days, and the police had earlier intervened by summoning both parties for resolution. However, tensions flared again late Wednesday night.
When Sub-Inspector Charanjit Singh attempted to mediate and de-escalate the situation, shots were fired by some individuals. Singh sustained severe gunshot wounds, and despite being rushed to the hospital, he was declared dead by doctors. One of his colleagues also suffered injuries in the attack.
Following the tragic incident, SSP Abhimanyu confirmed that 20 persons, including village sarpanch Kuldeep, have been booked under multiple sections, including murder. The SSP stated that all accused have been rounded up and that a detailed investigation is underway.
Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann paid tribute to the slain officer’s bravery and announced a compensation package of Rs 2 crore for his family. In a post on X (formerly Twitter), CM Mann wrote, "Salute to the bravery of Shaheed Sub-Inspector Charanjit Singh who sacrificed his life while performing his duty in Tarn Taran. His commitment and courage will always be remembered. The Punjab Government will provide an ex gratia of Rs 1 crore, while an additional Rs 1 crore will be paid by HDFC Bank as part of an insurance scheme. We stand in solidarity with the martyr’s family."
