PTC News Desk: Punjab recorded the highest single-day tally of stubble-burning incidents this season, with 1,251 field fires reported on Monday.

According to data from the Punjab Pollution Control Board (PPCB), this brings the overall number of such cases in the state to 9, 655.

The spike highlights the ongoing issue of stubble burning, which is a key contributor to air pollution in northern India. Monday's figures exceeded the daily totals from the previous three years, with 701 instances reported on the same day in 2022 and 637 in 2023.

Officials from the PPCB have underlined the need for stronger enforcement and greater farmer cooperation to address the situation.

Despite worsening air quality in Delhi, stubble burning persisted in parts of Punjab, with instances reported in fields in the Karamgarh village of Sri Muktsar Sahib.

Previously, the Commission for Air Quality Management (CAQM) took a key step towards reducing stubble burning by issuing orders requiring the imposition of revised Environmental Compensation (EC) in such circumstances.

The directive, given on November 7, 2024, was written to the Chief Secretaries of Punjab, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan, and Delhi, according to a press release from the Ministry of Environment, Forest, and Climate Change.
