Punjab, Haryana High Court declares Dallewal’s custody legal, orders free access for visitors
PTC Web Desk: The Punjab and Haryana High Court on Thursday ruled that the detention of farmer leader jagjit Singh Dallewal is legal, rejecting claims of illegal custody made in a petition filed by the Bharatiya Kisan Union (Doaba).
Farmers’ groups have been actively demanding the release of Dallewal, who is currently under the care of the Punjab Police and admitted to a private hospital. They had also approached the High Court seeking relief, claiming that Dallewal was being held unlawfully.
During the hearing, the High Court dismissed the petition, stating that Dallewal was not in illegal custody. The court clarified that his detention was lawful and as per procedure.
Additionally, the court directed the Punjab Government to allow family members, close relatives, or any person wishing to meet Dallewal in the hospital without any restrictions.
The petition was filed by Gurmukh Singh, president of BKU Doaba, who alleged that Dallewal’s detention was illegal. In response, the Punjab Government informed the court that no criminal case had been registered against Dallewal and he had been admitted to Park Hospital with his consent for better medical treatment.
The court, after hearing both sides, concluded that Dallewal was not under unlawful detention and disposed of the petition accordingly.
