Punjab govt releases Sarwan Singh Pander, other farmer leaders amid ongoing protests
PTC Web Desk: The Punjab Government on Friday released several farmer leaders who were detained in various jails across the state. Farmers were seen raising their fists in defiance as they walked out of prisons in Patiala, Muktsar, and other districts.
Among those released were Sarwan Singh Pandher of the Kisan Mazdoor Morcha (KMM) and Kaka Singh Kotra and Abhimanyu Kohar from the SKM (non-political). These leaders were taken into custody on the evening of March 19 while returning from a meeting with Union and Punjab government ministers in Chandigarh. While most were sent to different jails, farmer leader jagjit Singh Dallewal, who was on a hunger strike, was taken to the PWD Rest House in Jalandhar and later shifted to a private hospital in Patiala for medical care.
Following their release, several farmer leaders gathered at Gurdwara Dukh Niwaran Sahib in Patiala before heading to the hospital where Dallewal is being treated.
Farmers stated that they would assess the situation before deciding their next course of action. However, they are expected to participate in protests outside Deputy Commissioner offices across Punjab later in the day.
This development comes as farmers continue their agitation for key demands, including better crop prices and loan waivers.
