Punjab forms new policy to bring notorious criminals, terrorists back from other states' jails

PTC Web Desk: The Punjab Government has introduced a new policy to bring back notorious criminals and terrorists lodged in jails of other states. Under this policy, prisoners serving sentences in different states can be transferred to Punjab, and similarly, offenders from Punjab involved in crimes in other states can be sent there.

The decision was taken during a Cabinet meeting. Besides, the long-pending restructuring of various posts in the Social Department has now been completed, with all positions designated for A-class officers.

Finance Minister Harpal Singh Cheema said Punjab’s prisons currently housed 31,000 inmates, including 11,000 booked under the NDPS (Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances) Act. Additionally, approximately 200 gangsters, 75 terrorists, and 160 high-profile smugglers are imprisoned.

Earlier, there was no structured policy for the exchange of prisoners, but with this new framework, the authorities can tighten their grip on criminals and gangsters. The state government has also identified a list of 46 gangsters who have relocated to jails in other states to evade Punjab’s legal system.

School committees to have 16 members

The Punjab Cabinet also decided to increase the number of members in school committees to 16, comprising 12 parent representatives and four school officials. Additionally, MLAs and municipal councilors will be able to nominate members to the committee. The chairperson will be selected from the parent representatives, ensuring that elected leaders stay informed about the school’s requirements.

The vice-chairperson will be chosen from the school representatives. In another development, the chairpersons of the Punjab Pilgrimage Committee and the Punjab Advisory & Tourism Board have voluntarily opted not to take any honorarium.
