Chakka Jam: In protest against the slow procurement of paddy, leaders of the Samyukt Kisan Morcha (SKM) have announced their plan to block major roads across Punjab today (Friday). The farmer organisation claims that despite repeated demands, there has been no improvement in the procurement process.

Farmers will block key roads around mandis (markets) statewide for four hours, from 11 am to 3 pm. An SKM leader said the decision to obstruct the roads was made on October 19, emphasising that if the state government failed to ensure smooth procurement of paddy within four days, they would take further significant action.

He warned that if the issues remained unresolved, a major protest would take place on October 29, where all District Collector (DC) offices across the state would be gheraoed from 11 am to 3 pm. Besides, black flags would be shown to ministers, MLAs, and officials of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) government as they visit grain markets.

Apart from the SKM, other organisations have also joined the protest against the government. Sarwan Singh Pandher, leader of the Punjab Kisan Mazdoor Sangharsh Committee, announced plans to block highways in the Majha-Malwa-Dooaba region starting October 26 at 1 pm. This movement will continue indefinitely until their demands are met. The protest will focus on several issues, including the FIRs filed against farmers for stubble burning, the slow pace of paddy procurement, and the shortage of DAP (Di-ammonium Phosphate) fertiliser.

Key Demands

Immediate and efficient procurement of paddy.

Withdrawal of FIRs related to stubble burning.

Resolution of the DAP fertiliser supply crisis.

Assurance of fair prices for crops.
