Punjab extends winter vacations in schools till January 7 amid cold wave
In adherence to the directions of Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann, all government, aided, recognised, and private schools across Punjab will remain closed until January 7 due to severe cold conditions. Schools will reopen on January 8. The decision has been taken to ensure the safety and well-being of students amid the ongoing cold wave.
Earlier, the Punjab Government had declared winter break in all government, aided, private and recognised schools across the state from December 24 to December 31 owing to cold weather conditions in the region. However, with cold wave sweeping the region and considering the safety of the children in mind, the Punjab Government has extended the winter break till January 7.
Further decision will be take after assessing the situation at that time.
Cold wave sweeping Punjab and Haryana
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an orange alert for fog and cold wave in 22 districts of Punjab and Haryana on Monday, attributed to an ongoing cyclone circulation in the region. The weather department has warned that visibility could be severely impaired, with some areas potentially facing dense fog that may reduce visibility to zero.
According to IMD Chandigarh, the impact of ongoing snowfall in the mountains will extend to Punjab and Chandigarh, causing a significant drop in temperatures across the region. The districts under the orange alert in Punjab and Haryana include:
