Punjab electricity tariff 2025-26: No hike, lower bills for many consumers

PTC Web Desk: The Punjab State Electricity Regulatory Commission (PSERC) has announced new electricity tariff rates for 2025-26, effective from April 1, 2025. The commission, led by Viswajeet Khanna (IAS retd) and Paramjeet Singh (retd. District and Sessions Judge), has ensured that there is no overall increase in electricity charges for consumers. Instead, some consumers will see reductions in their bills.

Punjab State Power Corporation Limited (PSPCL) had initially projected a revenue deficit of Rs 5,090.89 crore for the financial year 2025-26 and had requested an increase in electricity rates. However, after reviewing the financials, PSERC determined a revenue surplus of Rs 311.50 crore instead.

With total revenue from the current tariff standing at Rs 47,985.81 crore, and the net requirement for 2025-26 at
Rs 47,674.31 crore, the commission decided to redesign the tariff without adding any extra burden on consumers.

Key highlights of new tariff

  • No increase in fixed charges for any category of consumers.
  • Fewer slabs for Domestic (DS) and Non-Residential (NRS) consumers, making bill calculations simpler
  • Consumers using over 300 units per month will see lower bills
  • Rs 160 reduction for loads up to 2 kW
  • Rs 90 reduction for loads between 2 kW and 7 kW
  • Rs 32 reduction for loads between 7 kW and 20 kW

  • For loads above 1000 kVA, the new rate is Rs 280/kVAh, the lowest among merged slabs.
  • Special night tariff continues for industrial consumers:
  • 50% discount on fixed charges
  • Energy charge at Rs 5.50/kVAh for electricity usage between 10 pm  and 6 am.
