PTC Web Desk: Alarmed by the surge in stray dog attacks on children, the Punjab State Commission for Protection of Child Rights has directed the Local Government and Rural Development Departments to conduct a comprehensive census of stray dogs across all cities.

Taking suo-motu cognizance of the issue, Commission Chairman Kanwardeep Singh expressed grave concern over the incidents. "Media reports have highlighted distressing cases, including the tragic deaths of two children in Hasanpur village near Ludhiana within a week," he said in an official statement.

Similar reports from Mohali, Zirakpur, Amritsar, Machhiwara Sahib, and Nabha have heightened public anxiety. Singh called for urgent measures, including the sterilisation of stray dogs, to curb the rising attacks.

The Chairman revealed that he has formally approached the Administrative Secretaries of the Punjab Local Government Department and the Rural Development & Panchayat Department, urging the swift implementation of the Animal Birth Control Rules, 2023. These rules, notified by the Ministry of Fisheries, Animal Husbandry & Dairying on March 10, 2023, aim to regulate the stray dog population and reduce the risk of attacks, particularly on children.

He stressed that timely enforcement of these provisions is essential to address this pressing public safety concern.
