Punjab byelections 2024:  The Election Commission is likely to announce bypolls for four Assembly constituencies in Punjab—Barnala, Dera Baba Nanak, Chabbewal, and Gidderbaha—today (Tuesday). The announcement is likely to coincide with a press conference scheduled for this afternoon, where the EC will release schedule for elections in Maharashtra and Jharkhand. The bypolls are anticipated to be held either at the end of November or in the first week of December.

Notably, four Assembly seats are set to witness bypolls as their former MLAs have recently been elected as Members of Parliament (MPs). Following their election to the Lok Sabha, they resigned from their Assembly seats. Gurmeet Singh Meet Hayer, who represented Barnala, is now an MP from Sangrur, while former Gidderbaha MLA Amrinder Singh Raja Warring has been elected from Ludhiana. Raj Kumar Chabbewal is now an MP from Hoshiarpur, and former Dera Baba Nanak MLA Sukhjinder Singh Randhawa represents Gurdaspur in the Lok Sabha. The political atmosphere in these constituencies is expected to heat up in the coming days as parties gear up for the polls.

Political parties have started preparations for the upcoming bypolls. Election in-charges and co-incharges have been appointed. The Shiromani Akali Dal held its core committee meeting two days ago, while the Congress has also formulated its strategy for the bypolls. The BJP has completed its preparations as well. Meanwhile, the ruling Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) is focusing on development projects in the constituencies, with the Chief Minister having already toured all four regions.
